Mandatory CCTV in slaughterhouses

I believe we have a moral duty to treat animals in a humane way.  The last Labour Government had a proud record on animal welfare and the 2006 Animal Welfare Act placed a requirement on abattoir operators not to cause unnecessary suffering to an animal.

However the undercover footage acquired by Animal Aid showed that there is still a lot of work to do.  It is appalling and deeply distressing to see this widespread mistreatment of animals in British slaughterhouses.

The Food Standards Agency supports the use of CCTV in slaughterhouses as an effective monitoring tool for animal welfare to ensure standards are being met at all times.  The Farm Animal Welfare Committee, which advises the Government on the welfare of farmed animals, also recommends that slaughterhouses install CCTV in a structured and proportionate way.

I support this and have now signed EDM 153 Mandatory Installation of CCTV in Slaughterhouses.
