Joining workers striking for the living wage
Joining workers striking for the living wage

Boris Johnson isn’t trying to negotiate a deal with the EU.  As Amber Rudd made very clear in her resignation from not just the Cabinet but also the Conservative Party, all he’s doing is push for “no deal”.  He’s pursuing Farage and Trump’s hard Brexit agenda that would put at risk hard-won workers’ rights, lower standards and open the doors to US companies getting their hands on our precious NHS.

He’s doing that despite our success in Parliament this week introducing and passing a Bill with cross party support forcing him to secure an extension to the Brexit deadline and despite his own Government’s leaked reports predicting “no deal” would lead to food, medicine and fuel shortages, the return of a hard-border with Ireland, a meltdown at ports and thousands of job losses.

It’s shameful.  He has no mandate, no morals and no majority, and whilst there is nothing I would like more than to see him become the shortest serving PM is history, I won’t vote for a General Election until we’ve completely eliminated any possibility of crashing out on Halloween.

I’ve been out speaking to local people across Hornsey & Wood Green all week, including joining Muswell Hill’s own stop the coup protests on Monday, where there was lots of concern about “no deal” and backing for Labour’s efforts to bring all the opposition parties together around the table and stand up against Johnson’s reckless approach.

Away from Brexit, I joined workers outside the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy in solidarity with their fight against poverty pay. In answer to my question in the House of Commons back in July, PM Johnson made a commitment that every single entry-level worker and cleaner in Whitehall would be paid the living wage.  Now he needs to honour that promise and I’ll keep up the pressure until he does.

On Friday I joined union reps to meet senior managers at the Haringey/Veolia refuse depot to raise constituents’ concerns about bin collections and street cleaning.  I also asked about plans for Brexit worker’s reps continued involvement in the Euro Works Council post Brexit.
