Catherine West MP speaking at a CND event

75 years ago the world witnessed the horrific power of atomic warfare in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

We must never again reach the stage where these weapons, which have become infinitely more destructive over the past 75 years, are used. This is why Labour will make peace the main priority of its foreign policy.

But to do this, we need to make the case for conflict resolution and diplomacy over escalatory rhetoric and brinkmanship. As we all know, every day it becomes more clear that we cannot go back to business as usual after the Coronavirus crisis passes – where conflicts are allowed to claim the lives of innocent civilians across the world and the proliferation of nuclear and non-nuclear weapons rages on.

I long for the day where we can gather to remember those lost in war, safe in the knowledge there will never again be conflict and pain amongst the peoples of the world. This day is possible, and we must continue working towards it.
