A trade agreement between Europe and the USA could bring benefits and a boost to both economies. However, it must not be allowed to drive down standards, undermine hard won workers’ rights and weaken environmental protection in Europe or force our public services to become freely open to private intervention.
The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the European Union and the USA has concerning implications, which will allow private healthcare companies to bid for NHS work and make it very difficult to ever get out of those contracts.
We need democratic accountability over services, not secret deals. I will campaign for a full exemption for public services such as health and education from any future trade deals.
The group 38 degrees are campaigning against TTIP. You can find out details about the campaign here.
