Catherine West MP presenting petition to Downing Street
Catherine West MP presenting petition to Downing Street

42,000 people from other EU countries have made Haringey their home.  They are our friends, family and neighbours and a valued part of our diverse community.  EU citizens have come here to look after our sick, teach our children and contribute to our country, just as so many British citizens have gone to other EU countries.

This Tory Government is feeding prejudice and stoking division by calling our friends, family and neighbours “queue jumpers”.  They are failing to respect the longstanding mutual arrangement between EU countries that has brought so much to the culture and economy of our community.

I launched a petition calling on the Tory Government to:

  • Abandon this toxic, anti-immigrant language that is so divisive and dangerous.
  • Immediately guarantee continuation of the full, existing rights of all EU citizens living in Haringey.
  • Guarantee that EU citizens’ rights will not be affected in the event of no Brexit deal being agreed.

Over 2,000 people signed it in a matter of days and I joined Cllr Joseph Ejiofor, Leader of Haringey Council and Haringey Labour to present it to 10 Downing Street on Monday 10 December.
