UPDATE 02/11/20 TORY U-TURN!

Well done Mayor Sadiq Khan for fighting for Londoners against this Government’s attack. The deal he has negotiated for the next six months will save free travel for the under 18s and over 60s and stop the Tory expansion of the congestion charge.

We are in the middle of a pandemic and hundreds of thousands of Londoners are struggling. The Tories should never have sought to play politics with Londoners lives in this way.

I’m appalled by reports that Boris Johnson wants to force an extension of the congestion charge zone up to the north circular. There is no justification for such a move.

It would be disastrous for people in Wood Green and for our local businesses who are already paying the price of this Tory Government’s failure.

We are in the middle of a pandemic and so many people in Haringey are really struggling. Unemployment has risen by 182% since March and we’ve got the highest proportion of people claiming unemployment benefit in London.

This shameful Tory move would put 4 million additional Londoners in the congestion charge zone and comes on top of scrapping young people’s free travel “zip card”.

This is yet another kick in the teeth for hard-pressed Londoners and I will do everything I can to fight it.
