Glasgow may be over, but the UK remains COP President for the coming year, and our credibility rests on demonstrable climate action at home. COP26 itself only delivered modest progress, with analysis suggesting the pledges made put us on track for a catastrophic 2.4C temperature rise, far above the 1.5C ambition of the Paris agreement.
We need a transformational leap that ends fossil fuel use, steps up to support the world’s poorest countries on the front line of climate breakdown and a Chancellor who stops blocking the investment necessary to protect us from the threat of climate change and delivers the benefits that tackling it promises.
I’ve written to the Prime Minister to urge his Government to continue the momentum from COP26, including abandoning plans for the Cambo Oil Field and the new coal mine in Cumbria.
