Black History Month October 2024
Black History Month October 2024

As we come together to celebrate Black History and all of the amazing contribution of the Black community here in Haringey, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the awful riots that we all witnessed in the summer.

The sad reality is hate and racism is still alive in Britain. Hate so strong that it convinced some to set fire to hotels with vulnerable refugees inside, to throw bricks at mosques and to assault ethnic minorities in the streets. Hate so strong it demonised members of our communities and labelled them as “the other”.

Yet, thousands of anti-racism protestors rallied in cities and towns across England and sent a clear message that hate will not be tolerated in their communities. Although the violent disorder was terrifying and shocking, the response from ordinary people was bigger and stronger. It is a reminder that there is still work to; we must come together and stand up against all forms of discrimination and racism.

Last week, I spoke at the Black History Haringey 365 Launch. It was a lovely occasion to join Haringey councillors, my fellow Member of Parliament for Tottenham, community leaders and my constituents.

I hope that this Black History Month, we all stand closer together and be united in our work to end discrimination and secure racial equality in this country.
