London is always changing. But it is essential that our built environment is designed to promote and enhance biodiversity.

That’s why I’m glad to say that as a part of the National Planning Policy Framework, it will now be a requirement to include swift bricks in new developments. This is also in addition to requirements to set new national standards for sustainable drainage systems and the protection of our rare chalk streams.

Many of my constituents have raised this environmental technology to me in the past, which is why I’m so excited to share it. Swift bricks are just like any regular brick used for construction, but have a cavity which allows birds to nest inside. Tackling the housing crisis doesn’t need to come at the cost of our natural habitats. Adapting urban development to grow in tandem, not against, our environment is essential for fostering a greener future.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government are seeking views on proposed changes to the National Planning Policy Framework, I encourage all my constituents who are interested to respond to here.
