St James’ Church free Legal Advice Centre has been a vital lifeline to so many local residents since it was founded by Peter Thompson QC over 20 years ago.
As years of Government cuts to legal aid have made it ever harder for people to access justice, their services are more in demand than ever. But they urgently need more legally trained volunteers to keep running their Wood Green (Wednesday afternoons) and Coppetts & Colney (Tuesday mornings) clinics.

Hosted by St James’s Church, Muswell Hill, the free Legal Advice Centre operates from 3 clinics: Muswell Hill, Coppetts & Colney and Wood Green. The Centre was founded over 20 years ago by Peter Thompson QC, former legal adviser to the Department for Work and Pensions. We provide a walk in and appointment service on a wide range of issues. Details can be found here.
We now urgently need:
- One pro bono legal adviser for our Tuesday morning Coppetts & Colney clinic which operates out of Wilton Road Community Church
- Two pro bono legal advisers for our busy Wednesday afternoon clinic at Wood Green which operates out of the Salvation Army Centre, behind Shopping City.
Legal advisers should be qualified solicitors or barristers, or have a legal qualification, and want to help people with their everyday justice problems.
The Wood Green clinic is open on Wednesdays from 1.30 to 4.30. We’ve been closed for a year, due both to major repair work to the building, and to covid restrictions. We’re now looking to re-open in September. We benefit from a partnership with Middlesex University with students providing reception, triage and research support for us.
If you are interested in providing regular pro bono legal advice at Wood Green on Wednesday afternoons or at Coppetts & Colney on Tuesday mornings (not necessarily every week) please contact
