Dear <<First Name>>

Since my last newsletter, I’m delighted to have welcomed two new Labour MPs to Parliament, with fantastic by-election victories in Wellingborough and Kingswood.  Labour overturned large Tory majorities in both seats, showing that people are coming back to Labour and switching from a divided, incompetent, increasingly cruel Tory party led by failed PM Sunak.  We have now had five by-elections over the past year with swings of over 20%.  Rishi Sunak’s contact with the electorate – any electorate – remains one of consistent rejection.  The General Election can’t come soon enough, but with a Tory party that has nothing but division and distraction left it isn’t going to be an easy campaign.  This month we were treated to the appalling spectacle of former Prime Minister Liz Truss peddling far right propaganda in the US and Lee Anderson making dangerous divisive comments about the Mayor of London.  Together with all London Labour MPs, I wrote to the PM urging him to act.  It’s right that Lee Anderson has lost the whip but so should Liz Truss – any proper leader would suspend her, but sadly we know that Rishi Sunak is too weak.  In London, the next election we face is the London  Mayoral and Assembly Member elections on Thursday 2 May.  This month I met Sadiq and his team.  Labour MPs at the meeting were keen to knock doors for Sadiq with a powerful offer of free school meals for London's primary school children, a freeze on travel fares for Londoners and the commitment to build more council homes to combat the housing crisis in the Capital.  With new voter ID rules and the increasingly desperate Tories changing the voting system to try and favour their candidate, turnout will really matter.  If you don't have photo ID, you can apply for a free one online now.  Don't miss your chance to have your say.

Below are just some of the things I’ve been doing this month.

Best wishes,

Catherine

We need an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza

In Parliament last week, I put my name to Labour’s amendment calling FOR an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, the release and return of all hostages, an end to settlement expansion and settler violence and condemning any military assault on Rafah.  Our motion went much further than the SNP motion – it included a call for Israel to comply in full with the ICJ ruling and supports recognition of Palestine as a contribution to, rather than an outcome, of a two-state solution.  Crucially, Labour sought to put forward an amendment the whole house could get behind and with the SNP, along with many Conservative Members, indicating that they would vote for it, I believe it was right that it should have been put to the vote.  I am glad it passed but the Tory decision to withdraw from the debate at the last-minute resulting in the SNP motion not being heard, and the resulting chaotic scenes on a matter of such importance were incredibly disappointing.  This isn’t an issue that should be a party-political game and the priority going forward must be working together to try and ensure the ambitions in our motion (which you can read in full here) are achieved.  Labour will continue doing everything we can to bring a desperately needed end to the suffering and secure a lasting peace.  This month, I was also pleased to welcome Shadow International Development Secretary Lisa Nandy MP to Hornsey & Friern Barnet to set out the work Labour has been doing since 7 October to lead the aid effort.  My website goes into much more detail, but most recently this includes:

  • Urging the UK Government to ensure there is no interruption in the flow of funding to UNRWA in the next financial year.
  • Visiting Egypt to understand the limitations of aid flow through the Rafah crossing.
  • Pushing strongly for the Kerem Shalom to be opened to increase aid capacity.
  • Calling for UK air drops of aid and the establishment of a British field hospital within Gaza.
  • Meeting with British Palestinian families and raising the need for a children’s plan including the evacuation for surgery of children with urgent medical needs.

I remain extremely concerned about the impact these events are having right here in our own community with a worrying rise in anti-semitism and Islamophobia.  My team and I are in regular contact with Haringey Police and local faith leaders and this week I attended a meeting co-ordinated by Council Leader Cllr Ahmet bringing together the council, the police and representatives from the Jewish community here in Haringey to discuss concerns and support.  Find out how you can report any concerns on my website.

Shadow International Development Secretary Lisa Nandy MP visited the constituency to talk about the conflict in the Middle East, international development and Labour's vision for Britain in the world of tomorrow.

Labour’s Green Prosperity Plan

Since I was first elected I’ve campaigned and spoken out forcefully for the need to put the environment at the front and centre of our politics. The climate crisis is the greatest threat facing not only the UK, but communities throughout the world – including some of the poorest and most disadvantaged.  Labour’s pledge to spend £28 billion per year was made in a very different economic time, before Liz Truss and the Tories crashed the economy and led to rocketing interest rates, increasing numbers of people losing their homes, and ballooning debt.  But Labour is still committed to a significant ramping up of capital investment in the green economy, significantly more than any other Party which seeks to govern the UK while being sensible with public finances and spending on other priorities as well, like fixing the NHS and boosting our education systemClick here to read about our Green Prosperity Plan, with a publicly owned Great British Energy company, a £6.6 billion programme to insulate Britain’s cold and leaky homes, and plans to create thousands of new, green jobs.

Climate justice is social justice and it was good to join constituents on the No Faith in Fossil Fuels Lent Vigil for Climate Justice.

Stop the criminalisation of homelessness

When the then Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, called homelessness a “lifestyle choice”, the Prime Minister stood by her. After 14 years in power, the Tories are now blaming homeless people rather than themselves. Not only is the government not building enough houses, but we also have a chronic lack of social housing. The Government’s plans to criminalise homelessness are wrong, cruel, and unworkable.  Instead of further stigmatising vulnerable people, I urge the government to get on with banning Section 21 and enact a national homebuilding programme to increase access to social housing and affordable homes.  A Labour Government has pledged to build 1.5 million new homes over five years, including additional support for first-time buyers.

Hosting my maternity roundtable in Parliament

Update on campaign to save the Whittington Hospital Maternity unit

The StartWell consultation on proposals that could see the closure of the Whittington Hospital is ongoing – and if you haven’t already, please do sign my petition opposing the plans or respond to the formal consultation.  Find out more on my website at www.catherinewest.org.uk/save-whittington-maternity.  This month I hosted a roundtable in Parliament with politicians, health professionals and charities to discuss maternity provision in north London more widely, I joined local Councillors to gather signatures for our petition in Muswell Hill and Stroud Green, and spent a wonderful morning with the Whittington Babies (of all generations) loudly making the case to protect this precious resource for future families.  Read my column in the Ham & High here. Opposition Day Debate on Ministerial Severance Pay

During a cost of living crisis where food prices, mortgages, energy costs and rents have soared, Tory Ministers are giving themselves thousands in taxpayer-funded severance payments. Shamefully, Liz Truss accepted £18,660 after her failed tenue as the shortest serving Prime Minister ever. That’s more than Haringey Giving raised during its last annual fundraising drive.  In our opposition day, Labour put forward a motion to put an end to this outrage but the Tories voted it down – watch my speech here

Great to be with Cllr Peray Ahmet at the opening of MRI and CT scanning services at the diagnostic centre in the heart of Wood Green. Thanks to all the staff who’ve worked so hard to bring these vital services into the community to improve access and availability of appointments.

Physician Associates

I co-ordinated a meeting with the Integrated Care Board to discuss concerns over the use and regulation of physician associates including training, supervision, transparency over their usage, patient awareness, and choice. It’s an issue I have been raising in Parliament and with Ministers for many months, and we discussed what more can be done by the ICB to raise awareness of what physician associates are, how they are allowed to be used and inform patients about choice and how to complain.

My month in numbers

Last month, I received over 2,150 emails on policy issues.  I’m still receiving a lot of emails on the situation in Gaza and continue to keep my website updated at www.catherinewest.org.uk/gaza.  Lots of you have also written in support of Diana Johnson’s amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill which would ensure that no woman faces prosecution or jail time for ending her pregnancy.  It is in nobody’s best interests to threaten these women with outdated Victorian criminal laws that are now 161 years old. I will continue to follow developments closely on this important issue. Casework remains busy and my office has opened almost 200 new cases and responded to over 1,000 casework emails.  Housing remains top of the pile including a continued rise in Section 21 evictions.  It's 5 years since the Tories promised to ban no-fault evictions. Instead, they’re going up. Thousands of distressed families facing homelessness because of Tory failure.  We need the Renters Reform Bill now – if they won’t act, a Labour Government will. You can read my latest Parliamentary Questions on subjects from school support for autistic students, the effectiveness of the National Tutoring Programme, through to support for EU citizens to make sure Hornsey & Friern Barnet residents don’t lose their rights post-Brexit.

I visited Fashion Enter in Harringay to talk about ethical and sustainable fashion.  We need to end abusive purchasing practices and I look forward to hosting a roundtable in Parliament to discuss how we can protect suppliers in the UK and abroad.

Presenting my petition to Save Barclays Bank in Crouch End

Thank you to everyone who signed my petition opposing the closure of Barclays Bank in Crouch End, barely a year since their Muswell Hill branch closed.  I presented it in Parliament last week – watch here - and will continue pushing the Government to do more to defend face-to-face banking.  A Labour Government would legislate to ensure every community has access to high street banking services.

Cutting the ribbon to mark the official opening of the brand new Wood Green Post Office in the Mall.  I am delighted our campaign to save it was successful.

Keeping our community safe

I hosted Haringey’s Youth Advisory Board and students from St Thomas More in Parliament to listen to their thoughts on how we can make our borough safer.  They had some great and thoughtful ideas and I look forward to following up at one of their Youth Advisory Board meetings, bringing together key representatives from the council, Mayor of London’s office, Police and partners. Following my walkabout with Muswell Hill traders before Christmas, I was back there this month together with Haringey Police to discuss the issues they’ve been experiencing and the increasing number of unacceptable incidents of violence and abuse faced by shop workers – an issue Labour has been raising in Parliament.  As a result of this walkabout, the Police have reopened an investigation into a recent shop theft, and I was also pleased to hear that evidence has been secured to detail and charge a suspect in another recent incident.  I’ll shortly be doing a similar walkabout with traders in Crouch End.

Support for carers

Social care is always an issue high in my casework inbox, and I dropped into the Carers Coffee Morning in Priory Park this month to talk about the need for good quality support for carers and the struggles local councils are facing because of Tory cuts. Sadly our incredible carers are being left to fill in the gaps of a failing social care system. In Parliament, I’ll continue to fight to ensure unpaid carers get the support they need.

Shadow Foreign Affairs:

Japan

I was delighted to make my second visit to Japan this month as part of a cross-Party delegation with the Japan Society. Japan is a significant partner for the UK in the Asia-Pacific with deepening economic, security, and trade ties. As shadow Asia Minister I have made it clear that Labour cherishes and supports the relationship with Japan and I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Kishida, the Foreign Minister, and a range of UK and Japanese businesses to underline Labour’s position.

Indonesia

Following the recent elections in Indonesia I had the opportunity to discuss the conduct, the outcome, and the bilateral relationship with the Indonesian Ambassador to the UK. There is great potential for a deepening of our relationship with Indonesia given its strategic location and its growing population. Labour is committed to reconnecting with the wider region if we are entrusted with the responsibility of government and deepening our partnership with countries like Indonesia would be a key part of this approach.
