A King’s Speech to start rebuilding Britain’s future

Such a privilege to return to Parliament under a Labour Government
Such a privilege to return to Parliament under a Labour Government

It was a privilege to be in Parliament for the State Opening on Wednesday (17 July), with the King’s Speech announcing our new Labour Government’s priorities and the laws we plan to introduce.

After 14 years of Conservative failure, I warmly welcome these first steps on a path of national renewal.  With over 30 bills, we set out plans, amongst other things, to:

  • Protect taxpayers’ money and people’s living standards, with a Budget Responsibility Bill.
  • Reform planning rules to build the homes and infrastructure we desperately need, and reform our private rental sector to provide security and decent standards for renters.
  • Level up workers’ rights with a New Deal for Working People.
  • Invest in cleaner, cheaper British energy.
  • Empower local leaders to deliver for their communities.
  • Transform our buses and bring rail services under public ownership.
  • Give all our children the best start in life.
  • Reduce violence against women and girls and give the police the powers they need to tackle anti-social behaviour and crimes against shop workers.

These are all things I’ve long campaigned for and which will transform our community and the lives of so many people here in Hornsey & Friern Barnet.

I look forward to supporting these measures to deliver the change the country, and our community, has voted decisively for.
