This week, MPs returned to Parliament after the summer recess.
On Tuesday 3rd September, the Secretary of State for Transport presented the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Bill for its Third Reading. We said we would nationalise the trains and we are delivering on this.
On Thursday 5th September, we passed the Second Reading of the Great British Energy Bill. We promised to set up a clean energy company, owned by the British people, and we are delivering on this. Later that afternoon, we introduced the Water (Special Measures) Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that will finally crack down on bosses for polluting water. We said we would sort out sewage and pollution in our waters, something that the Tories turned a blind eye to, and we are one step closer to reforming the water sector.
This week, we also announced plans to remove the remaining 92 hereditary peers from the House of Lords, whose presence in our democratic institution is outdated and completely indefensible.
While the Tories dithered and delayed for years, we have enacted four core manifesto promises in just one week. This is the change that my constituents voted for, and we will continue to serve. I am grateful for all the constituents who have been writing to me this week on different issues such as animal welfare, assisted dying, improving our NHS and cleaning up our rivers and seas. I will always try and raise your concerns with Ministers and feed back your thoughts to colleagues.
