I recently paid a visit to local resident Dorothy to celebrate her 106th birthday. Dorothy worked as an Air Raid Warden during World War Two, part of that special generation that worked tirelessly to preserve our freedom and democratic values. Dorothy’s service represents the spirit and unity that defined Britain during its darkest hours.

I was also very pleased to give Dorothy a letter from the Prime Minister wishing her a happy birthday and thanking her for her service. This recognition means the world, not just to Dorothy, but to everyone who cherishes the legacy of those who gave so much.

I didn’t manage to get any secret formulas from Dorothy about how to make sure you live until 106, but I did think about how we can make sure that everyone in our community can thrive. How we can provide every possible chance and opportunity for the next generation, whatever their background?

This starts with tackling child poverty. Following new funding from the Mayor of London in 2023, all primary school children in London now receive free school lunches. Last month, the Prime Minister announced that all secondary school children from families receiving Universal Credit will also receive free school lunches. 1660 secondary school students in Hornsey and Friern Barnet will be eligible.

750 schools across the country will also benefit from a free breakfast club under the government’s plans. And I am especially pleased that St James’ Primary School in Muswell Hill will be one of the first schools to get one of 300 new school-based nurseries, ensuring that more families in Hornsey and Friern Barnet can access high quality early education for their children.

No one should have to choose between paying their bills and feeding their children. These measures will help families facing cost-of-living pressures by putting money back in their pockets. Ensuring that children have a healthy meal during the school day also leads to better concentration in lessons and improves educational outcomes. It is all about ensuring that children get the best possible chance to succeed at school, at work, and in life.

This is exactly the kind of legacy that we need to leave to the next generation.
