Following today’s events, Catherine West MP said:
“Last night, one of the chief Brexit cheerleaders, David Davis, slunk away under the cover of darkness from the shambles he helped create. Today, Boris Johnson joined him. Continuing a career-long habit of putting his own leadership ambitions above all else.
At the same time, Jacob Rees-Mogg and his right-wing Eurosceptic cronies plot to oust the Prime Minister, making Theresa May’s position increasingly untenable.
I voted against triggering Article 50 last year because the Tories had no plan and no clue.
Fifteen months on, Theresa May can’t even agree negotiating principles with her own party. In trying to placate her warring team, she’s ended up pleasing no-one. The plans she has finally put forward fail Labour’s six tests. How can anyone have faith she will deliver a good deal that protects our country, our economy and our communities?
Yet the Brexiteers offer no alternative. Two years with the civil servant expertise, resources and capacity of his office David Davis has produced nothing except loud, empty noise. The Vote Leave campaign, headed by Boris Johnson and Michael Gove, is being investigated for electoral fraud.
This is an utter mess and the clock is ticking.
I have always supported a People’s Vote so the people of Britain can consider the reality of the deal we face, not the spin and lies of the referendum campaign.
I also believe we must be ready for a General Election at any moment. This shower of a Government doesn’t have the support of Parliament. It’s time to prove they also don’t have the support of the country.”
